The station, which started servicing Lithuania in 1983, is similar to that at Chernobyl in the Ukraine and supplies 70% of the country\u2019s electricity.  The other RMBK reactor, providing 1300 megawatts, will continue to operate until the end of 2009. <\/p>\n<p>The EU has pledged almost two billion euro to help close the plant because of worries about safety at it and the nearby town of Visaginas. <\/p>\n<p>Viktoras Sevaldinas, the station\u2019s director, said the disaster at Chernobyl had \u201d&#8230;cast a shadow over our plant too\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew the first unit would be closed long ago and we have been prepared for it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.european-lifestyle.net\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/01\/visaginas-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"visaginas\" title=\"visaginas\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.european-lifestyle.net\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/01\/visaginas-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.european-lifestyle.net\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/01\/visaginas-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.european-lifestyle.net\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/01\/visaginas.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cOnly after five years will we be able to remove the nuclear fuel from the containers in the first unit.  Later we will start to dismantle the reactor itself.
