rostropovich_13815th May 2004 – The musical program of the Barcelona-2004 world culture forum opened with Benjamin Britten’s symphony War Requiem on Friday night. Famous Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich conducted the orchestra.

The War Requiem is one of the best contemporary symphonies dedicated to WWII victims, Maestro Rostropovich told journalists. This is a perfect composition to open the musical program of this humanitarian and anti-war forum, he added.

“Music is our common language, which unites people and needs no translators,” the musician said.

According to forum participants, culture is an instrument of dialogue which helps achieve mutual understanding between nations and their progress. “Better world is possible” is the forum’s motto. Participants come out against war, violence and terrorism.

The forum will run until September 26. All in all, 5 million people are expected to visit it.
