Hungary approves the European Union Constitution
Hungry has become the second state of the EU to approve the new EU constitution after Lithuania
Like Lithuania the treaty was approved by parliament and not national referundum. The Hungarian parliament ratified the new treaty overwhelmingly with 304 votes for and only 9 against.
The members of the EU have been given until 1st November 2006 to retify the treaty. If only one country fails, the treaty is blocked. It is not certain that a sucessful vote will take place in France or Britain, which is taking the unusal step of referendum.
